Collin College partners with manufacturing consort

A consortium of manufacturing and construction companies partnered with Collin College to provide job training using an $808,066 Skills Development Fund grant from the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC).

The TWC indicated the grant will be used to train 455 new and incumbent workers to program and maintain equipment and will provide high-end manufacturing training to assist the consortium in improving manufacturing processes. Trainees will include assemblers, technicians and brake press operators. Upon completion of training, the workers will earn an average hourly wage of $20.97, according to the TWC.  Plano business participants in the grant are Applied Concepts Inc. and Rapid Tooling.

In fiscal year 2009, Skills Development Fund grants created or upgraded 19,516 jobs, which paid an average hourly wage of $24.44. These grants assisted 170 Texas employers with their customized training needs. The Legislature appropriated $90 million to the Skills Development Fund for the 2010-11 biennium. (8/25/10)
