Technology titans Texas Instruments and Rockwell Collins have a storied history of spinning off numerous companies as well as attracting a host of suppliers and technical talent in Plano. The first microchip was created only five minutes away. As a result, Plano has a number of manufacturers, logistics and distributors concentrated in circuit board assembly, optoelectronics, semiconductor, RFID and other technologies. After the 2001 telecom downturn, many of the surviving companies shifted to medical, defense and homeland security sectors for new growth. Some notable companies include Flex, Raytheon, ABB Power Electronics (formerly GE Critical Power) and Eltek.
