Plano provides seniors with choices in retirement communities which include 34 independent living, assisted living and long-term care facilities.

Senior Activities

The Plano Senior Recreation Center operated by the City of Plano Parks and Recreation Center provides a large number of social, recreational and educational opportunities for older adults.  Accredited by the National Institute of Senior Centers, the Senior Recreation Center includes:

  • A fitness room equipped with treadmills, stationary bicycles and a multi-station maximus machine
  • A billiards room with two standard size pool tables
  • A snack bar, run by volunteers, which operates 11am-12:30pm daily
  • Bingo, bridge, and various drop in activities are provided daily
  • Ballroom dances with live music are held every Tuesday from 7-9:15pm


Texas is 12th most affordable state for home care services

Home care costs, as well as costs of other long-term care services, are lower in Texas than they are nationally, according to Genworth’s 2010 Cost of Care Survey.

The median annual rate for home care costs in Texas is $41,070 statewide, 6 percent lower than the median annual rate of $43,472 nationally. Texas is the 12th most affordable state for home care services.

The study also found that statewide:

Annual costs for assisted living care in a one-bedroom/single occupancy setting have increased by 5 percent, a rate lower than the 7 percent increase nationally over the past five years. In Dallas-Fort Worth/Arlington, the median annual rate is $35,970, compared to $36,000 statewide and $38,220 nationally.

Annual nursing home private room costs, which total $58,765, are significantly lower than national levels of $75,190. The annual increase in cost for this type of care is 5 percent nationally over the past five years, compared to 3 percent in Texas. In D-FW/Arlington, however, the median annual rate of $75,190 is on par with national costs.

Annual adult day health care costs are significantly lower than they are nationally. In Texas, the average median cost is $7,800, compared to $10,400 in D-FW/Arlington and $15,600 nationally. (4/27/10)
