Japanese store Daiso opens in Plano

Daiso Japan is opening its Plano store on Friday August 26 at 10 a.m.

The store at 101 W. Spring Creek Pkwy is in the same shopping center with Asian grocery 99 Ranch Market.

The Plano store is Daiso's third in Texas. It opened stores in Carrollton and Irving last year.

Japan's version of a dollar store expanded to the U.S. first in Seattle in 2005 and now has 56 stores in California, Washington and Texas.

The company has annual sales of $3 billion from 2,800 stores, mostly in Japan.

When American retailers were growing dollar store chains, retailers in Japan started opening 100 Yen stores.  Daiso was founded in 1977.

Its U.S. stores are stocked with 20,000 items. Its aisles include merchandise for the kitchen, bath, laundry, closets, decorative accessories, gardening, gift wrap, office, hardware, pets, toys, snacks, clothing, candy and cosmetics. Most items are priced at $1.50 and some are at $5, $7 and $9. (8/17/2016)
