The Dallas Cowboys have won five Super Bowl championships. Dallas has been home to some of the greatest names in the NFL including Roger Staubach, Tom Landry, Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, and many more. Today they are still known to many as "America's Team." The Cowboys open the 2009 season in their new stadium. It features the two colossal arches, soaring 292 feet above the playing field, which supports a giant retractable roof.
The Dallas Mavericks began as an expansion team in 1980 and have become one of the top teams reaching the NBA finals in their 2005-2006 season. With the help of Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Terry, and under the ownership of Mark Cuban, the Mavericks have finished each of the last five years with 50+ wins.
Despite Texas' warm climate, hockey has been a tradition in Dallas since 1941, when the Texans joined the American Hockey Association. The Minnesota North Stars moved to Dallas in 1993 and became the Dallas Stars. Since arriving, the Dallas Stars have won their division six times and won the Stanley Cup in 1999. DART rail will take you from Plano to the American Airlines Center.
The Texas Rangers actually began in the 1960's as the Washington Senators, with President John F. Kennedy throwing the first pitch for the expansion team. The team moved to Texas in 1972, and has been home to such Major League Baseball legends as Nolan Ryan and Ivan (Pudge) Rodriguez.
FC Dallas, formerly the Dallas Burn, became a charter member of Major League Soccer in 1995. They have since been to the playoffs seven times and won the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 1997. FC Dallas plays in Frisco about 15 minutes away.
Frisco Rough Riders
Great minor league baseball in a family setting is just a few minutes from Plano. The Rough Riders are a Double-A minor league baseball team affiliated with the Texas Rangers.
Texas Motor Speedway
The Texas Motor Speedway offers a 1.5 mile track, seating for 150,000 fans, and 194 skybox VIP suites. Open since 1996, the Texas Motor Speedway features high-speed fun from NASCAR to IndyCar.
Colonial Golf Tournament
On perfect greens and fairways, top professional golfers compete during this nationally televised event in May. Made famous by Fort Worth's own Ben Hogan, the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial Golf Tournament draws winners of the U.S. P.G.A., U.S. Open, British Open, and the Masters Tournament.
Bryon Nelson Golf Tournament
The Bryon Nelson Championship, named for its first winner in 1944, is held each May in a suburb of Dallas. It is the leading fundraiser for charity on the PGA tour.
Lone Star Park
Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie is home of the 2004 Breeders’ Cup. This world-class racetrack offers live races many months of the year and a full-card simulcasting year-round. You can wager on horse racing all year long at this picturesque racetrack.
Texas Legends are the newest member of the NBA Development League, or D-League. They are an affiliated team of the Dallas Mavericks. They play just a few minutes away at the Dr Pepper Arena in Frisco.
Minor league hockey is minutes from Plano. The Allen Americans are members of the Central Hockey League and are affilicated with the Dallas Stars and the Colorado Avalanche. The Americans play at the Allen Event Center.
